Introduction:
The Getting Active Through Exercise (GATE) project promotes the benefits of exercise in the over-65’s to improve health and prevent falls. The project offers exercise opportunities to all Manchester residents over the age of 65 from the frailest to the more able.
What to expect from the project:
Home visits are made to individuals wishing to embark on a course of exercise. Each individual is assessed prior to recommendations being made to ensure that they are able to undertake an appropriate exercise programme. The type of exercise varies according to the needs of the individual and may include a home based programme or classes in the community. The project currently has 9 community exercise classes across the City.
Training is also a key feature of the work of the project. A number of training events are carried out each year to enable those working with older people to deliver seated exercise safely. Advisory sessions are frequently offered on the benefits associated with regular exercise in the older population. These sessions are available to a wide range of organisations both statutory and voluntary.
