Introduction:
The Pills & Spills Medication Review Service is a team of Clinical Pharmacists and technicians who are employed by Manchester PCT. We specialise in helping people to get the best out of their medications.
Some medicines can increase a person’s risk of falling (by causing them to become unsteady on their feet), so the Pills & Spills Team are particularly keen to review people’s medications to help reduce the risk of them having a fall.
A Pills and Spills medication review involves:
- A meeting with a pharmacist to discuss their medicines to ensure that they are getting the most from them.
- Ensuring a person is taking the right medicines for their condition.
- Trying to reduce the number of medicines a person takes.
- Where possible reducing medicines that can cause falls.
- Ensuring medicines are being monitored properly.
- Making sure no medicines are interacting with each other.
- Reducing the possibility of side effects.
- Answering any questions a person may have about their medicines.
Examples of other support which can be provided by the Pills & Spills Pharmacists and Technicians include: helping people to remember to take their medicines; giving advice about non-prescription and herbal medicines; finding ways to help open medicine containers and providing medicines information leaflets.
Any adult who is taking long term medications and is registered with a GP in Manchester PCT can receive free help from the Project.
